In front of one of the nation’s many Tesla stores, activists held signs and chanted slogans that echoed “Boycott Tesla” and “Elon Musk has got to go!” Some protestors attempted to dissuade shoppers from entering the showroom, while others framed the protest as part of a more significant movement against what they viewed as Musk’s unchecked power.
In March 2025, a wave of protests targeting Tesla and CEO Elon Musk spread across Southern California, including a demonstration at the Tesla showroom in Glendale’s Americana mall. Protesters voiced outrage over Musk’s increasing political influence, particularly his advisory role in President Donald Trump’s administration. As head of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk is leading cost-cutting initiatives that critics say endanger public services and federal jobs.
The demonstration at the Glendale rally remained peaceful but reflected growing discontent among progressives, who argue Musk’s role in government amounts to an undemocratic power grab. The protest was part of a broader national movement dubbed “Tesla Takedown,” which aimed to damage Tesla’s brand and Musk’s financial empire through consumer boycotts. The campaign, backed by activist groups like the 50501 movement, has led to protests at Tesla stores nationwide. Organizers argue that Musk’s involvement in downsizing federal agencies, including the controversial shuttering of USAID, represents an authoritarian shift in the government. Some protesters even compared Tesla vehicles to symbols of fascism, drawing backlash for extreme rhetoric.
Beyond Glendale, protests have erupted in other locations, including Waikiki, Hawaii, where demonstrators gathered outside a Tesla dealership to express their concerns. One protester, Nicole, an elementary school teacher and long-time Oahu resident, shared her frustration.
“I stand here today to voice my concerns about Elon Musk’s recent actions. His decisions have led to significant federal funding cuts, directly impacting our local community and essential services,” said Nicole. “We are here to send a clear message: corporate responsibility matters, and we won’t stay silent when our community is affected.”
While demonstrations have been largely peaceful, tensions have flared in some locations. Incidents of vandalism, including graffiti on Tesla vehicles and showrooms, have led to several arrests. Musk supporters and conservative media outlets have criticized the protests, branding them as baseless attacks on a successful entrepreneur. Online, hashtags like #IStandWithElon trend among Musk’s supporters, countering calls for a Tesla boycott.
Despite Musk’s dismissal, activists insist their efforts will continue. More Tesla showroom protests are planned in the coming weeks, with organizers aiming to escalate pressure. As Musk’s role in government expands, the clash between his supporters and opponents will likely intensify, ensuring Tesla remains at the center of a more significant political battle.
