As the 2024–25 NBA regular season draws to a close, teams are fighting for playoff spots, and fans are getting antsy. Beginning with the Play-In Tournament, an opportunity for lower performing teams to have a chance to compete in the playoffs, could we see any unlikely suitors make a run this spring?
With an unprecedented 61-15 record, the Cleveland Cavaliers have established themselves as the Eastern Conference’s top dog. The key to their success has been their potent offense, which scores an average of 122.4 points a game. The defending champion Boston Celtics aren’t far behind either; sitting at a 56-20 record and continue to be perennial contenders. With point guard Jalen Brunson’s comeback soon, the New York Knicks should be even stronger in their playoff drive, since they have managed to establish a 48-28 record despite battling injuries.
Additionally, with records above.500, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Indiana Pacers have both secured spots in the postseason. The Detroit Pistons have come a long way as well, sitting at 42–34, it will be their first winning season since 2016.
On the other hand, with a 64-12 record, the Oklahoma City Thunder have been unstoppable in the Western Conference. Led by MVP frontrunner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has helped them reach a potential 70-win season. The 50-27 record of the Houston Rockets proves that their rebuilding efforts have paid off, as they have clinched the second seed. With a 46-29 record, the Los Angeles Lakers are establishing themselves as strong contenders, led by the explosive pair of Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
Also guaranteed berths in the postseason are the Memphis Grizzlies, Denver Nuggets, and Golden State Warriors, whose first-round matchups will likely come down to the wire. Though recently, the Warriors have risen to the occasion after the addition of Jimmy Butler, winning 16 of their last 21 games and climbing the standings.
From April 15–18, each conference will hold its play-in round to decide the two remaining slots for the playoffs. For the seventh and eighth spots in the Eastern Conference, the Chicago Bulls will face off against the Orlando Magic, the Atlanta Hawks, the Miami Heat, and the Orlando Magic. The Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas Mavericks, and Sacramento Kings will compete for the last four playoff spots in the Western Conference.
While the top seeds usually get all the attention, there are several lower-seeded teams that could surprise everyone by making it to the playoffs. Even though they’re still young, the Houston Rockets have impressed and could pull off upsets against teams with better seeds. With their postseason experience, the Milwaukee Bucks are ready to challenge the conference’s finest in the East.
