Super Bowl LIX, which saw record breaking viewership (127 million viewers), was a lopsided one. The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40–22 in what was one of the most unexpected outcomes in Super Bowl History. Early on, the Eagles took charge, slowly making their way down the field and converting on key third downs, before taking an early lead. From there on, the Chiefs were shambles.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts was calm and composed throughout the game, making clutch plays, and playing mistake free football. By halftime Hurts had the Eagles up 24-0, having already thrown for the better part of his 221 yards.
Meanwhile, Kansas City’s offense and Patrick Mahomes made uncharacteristic mistakes, consistently shooting themselves in the foot when it mattered most. But most alarming was the Chiefs pass protection and Mahomes poor pocket presence, as Philly’s defensive line had 6 sacks, all while NOT sending a single blitz all game.
Despite finishing with 257 yards and three touchdowns, Patrick Mahomes had trouble getting into a rhythm in the first quarter, as the Eagles’ defensive held the Chiefs offense in check all night. “Definitely took a team effort, and the only thing I could think of is how we got here,” Hurts told ESPN after the game, highlighting their journey to redemption, just two years after losing the same matchup in Super Bowl 57.
