Loyola Marymount University softball begins their 2025-26 season on Feb. 5, with a home opener at Smith Field against Boise State.
After a competitive last season, redshirt-sophomore pitcher Angela Carrera affirms that this year’s team is striving towards the West Coast Conference championship title.
“Our staff has really good stuff, and we just need to trust that our preparation is good enough to attack the zone and attack these hitters,” she said.
Her work ethic, combined with that of her teammates, creates a like-minded, focused, and productive environment during their practices and team meetings.
“We live by pride, purpose, respect, intelligence, determination, and empowering others. We find ways to live up to those values every day, on and off the field,” Carrera said.
The team is on the path to success this upcoming season. Their communication on the field is improving each and every day through weekly meetings, practices, weights, one-on-ones, and more. During meetings, players review game and practice footage, discuss upcoming opponents, and practice specific skills. With outstanding leadership from returning players, the team is gaining a better sense of how their compatibility will take shape on the field.
Returning from a knee injury, senior outfielder Avery Francis is determined to bounce back stronger than ever for this team. Her work ethic and leadership, both on and off the field, have already made an impact on some of her teammates.
“She inspires me to work harder and to want to be the best for this team,” Carrera said. “She continues to blow my mind every time I see her on the field.”
Francis’ dedication is just one example of the team’s overall focus during this preseason. Teammates, like Carrera, have noted her dedication during drills and preseason games. On a gameplay note, the Lions have been adjusting their strategies during practice, working to sharpen athletes’ communication, improve defense, and perfect their offense. Each drill and preseason game is a chance for the athletes to prepare for the competition in the upcoming WCC season.
“We are intentional with every practice and locked in at all times. Spring will come fast, and we are going to need to be really focused so it’s not a surprise when spring comes,” said Sakora Harvell, a junior infielder.
These practice routines are designed to prepare the team for the intensity of the WCC season.
“Our coaches are encouraging us during practice to make sure every rep we do looks good, and we keep doing it until we perfect it,” Harvell added. “I’m proud of the girls on the team.”
The Lions most recently captured a West Coast Conference title in 2023 and are working hard to get to the top once again.
