WESTCHESTER, Calif. – The LMU Lions baseball team faced off against the Seattle University Redhawks this Valentine’s Day weekend, winning every game of the three-game series. The final game, played last Sunday, ended with a comfortable 12-6 victory.
Page Stadium welcomed fans last Sunday to an especially sunny and cloudless day—a departure from the previous week—and served as an excellent stage for the LMU-Seattle University series finale. A confident team, led by coach Donegal Fergus, who is entering his second season as LMU head coach, took the field and secured the lead in the second inning, going up 2-0, and never relinquished it.
Despite Seattle University’s abundance of left-handed hitters, starting pitcher Jonah Johnson (#25) allowed zero walks and only one run in his five innings pitched. Five other LMU pitchers took the mound, each allowing one hit or fewer.
Defensively, LMU was solid in both the infield and outfield. Shortstop James Bose (#11) and second baseman DJ Ghiorso (#18) worked in tandem around second base, coordinating their positions and managing the baserunner while looking for flyouts and groundouts.
In the outfield, there was no shortage of fly balls to cover. LMU right fielder Colby Wallace (#13) was especially determined, chasing down a foul ball in the third inning. After sprinting, diving, and making the catch, Wallace took half of the clay he landed on with him as he reset himself back in position.
Offensively, there was no shortage of hits, runs, and steals in LMU’s final game against Seattle University. Catcher Nate Savoie (#99) was arguably the offensive MVP, launching a pair of home runs along with additional base hits. Notably, center fielder Devan “Dev” Ornelas (#15) and designated hitter Zion Williams (#7) trailed Savoie with three hits apiece.
As LMU baseball comes into full swing, so does Page Stadium. The field, located behind Gersten Pavilion near the LMU gym, provides seating for fans. Students with a valid ID can attend games for free throughout the season and purchase concessions with meal plan “LION dollars.”
As the season ramps up, LMU baseball has two more home games this week before traveling to New Orleans for a three-game series against Tulane starting Friday.
