Why Hollywood Reboots Will Never End

Dune. How to Train Your Dragon. Mean Girls. For years, Hollywood studios have produced countless reboots and remakes, reviving classic franchises for new generations of viewers. While the industry has dealt with criticism for a lack of originality, these films continue to dominate the box office. As they continue to release, their success proves they are not only creative decisions but also profit-driven projects driven by nostalgia and audience familiarity.

Why are reboots constantly being released? Well, the answer is simple. Original movies face far more risks. When studios begin making an original movie, they bear the risk of financial uncertainty. They are also entering an unfamiliar market, as box-office sales and streaming views fluctuate.

Consider Madame Web, for example, a Sony Pictures superhero production that introduced a new storyline to its universe. While it featured well-known actors, including Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, the film still struggled to gain attention, only grossing $43.8 million domestically. On the other hand, the reboot of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes grossed over $171.1 million in the same market. Comparing the movies, a new screenplay with unfamiliar characters struggles to appeal to audiences, while a reboot reclaims a fanbase with a familiar background in the franchise. They require less marketing and are guaranteed viewership just from familiarity. For studios, these reboots provide the security they need, since a financial failure can cost them millions.

Nostalgia has also become a main selling point in the entertainment industry. Whether it’s watching beloved characters or revisiting old stories, people love reconnecting with films that provide a comforting experience. Studios capitalize on this emotional attachment by intentionally creating remakes and reboots to draw audiences back to the theater. Compared to the risk of producing a new project, these films bring back a familiar audience through their guaranteed turnout. Regardless of joining for a first watch or rejoining a fanbase, these projects bring together a community to connect over a shared story.

Being a safer bet over original films, these remakes will continue to be made and benefit from the same cycle. But what does that mean for original storytelling? It doesn’t mean that they are doomed, but they must use new, unique strategies to compete.

While reboots usually win audiences over with recognition, original movies have many other standouts that they don’t. Breakout performances from upcoming actors and new approaches to storytelling offer audiences a film experience that reboots can’t provide. Film festivals and social media also create buzz and excitement among the film community. By doing what reboots can’t, original screenplays can compete by bringing creativity to the big screen.

Hollywood reboots have proven to be more than just a trend. As long as nostalgia sells, studios will continue to produce them. Although some audiences claim to be tired of remakes and want something new, many still watch out of curiosity. However, that doesn’t mean that viewers have to continue watching them. If original screenplays can present fresh ideas, they can shift audience attention toward their films. Then, even the oldest of franchises will have to step aside for something new.
