Battle of the Streaming Services: Apple Music vs. Spotify

With Spotify wrapped and Apple Music replays coming out soon, it makes me think about the ongoing feud between Apple Music and Spotify users. I personally am an Apple Music listener which I feel gets me a lot of heat from my friends. I also use Soundcloud from time to time but we’ll leave it out of this discussion for now. People become extremely passionate about their music streaming service. I have seen so many heated discussions between my friends about it, it’s insane, so today I want to look at the differences between the two platforms and see which one is the best.

Spotify has been in the game more than ten years before Apple Music. With it being created in 2006, it has seniority, and is just a classic.

I used to use Spotify when I was in middle school and some of high school. At some point my parents decided to start paying for an Apple Music family subscription, I wasn’t going to deny that so I just went with it.

Spotify has so many great things about it like the fact that there is a free version accessible to people, you just need to listen to ads which is annoying but hey, free is free. I would play it off of my computer so there wouldn’t be ads.

In my opinion it is easier to navigate through the app especially when it comes to the fun discovery pages and curated playlists that they make.

I did notice that Apple Music copied that cool DJ mix thing that would flow songs together.

One of the coolest features that they created was the collaborative playlists. In freshman year of high school my best friend and I created a shared playlist that is a relic to us now. It was so fun for both of us to add different songs and see what the other one put on there. Yet again another feature that Apple copied…

Apple Music launched on June 30, 2015 way after Spotify, who at this time was expanding into the world of podcasts. Strangely enough this year I listened to the least amount of music that I ever have, and listened to way more podcasts but mainly on YouTube so I have no real opinion on this.

One thing that Apple Music beat Spotify to was real-time lyrics. I love this feature because I am a lyrics person. I love knowing all the lyrics to my favorite songs and I also love analyzing them. Spotify has since added the same feature which does not set Apple Music apart much.

They do however, have a higher audio resolution which is important for those who care about that kind of thing. I can’t tell the difference but I can see that being a plus for many.

Although I think it is clear that Spotify is the O.G. and is the winner of this argument, Apple Music pretty much has the same features now. If you’re looking for an ad free listening experience you can’t go wrong with either. An Apple Music subscription costs $10.99 while Spotify charges $11.99 so it really comes down to aesthetics and if you value music quality, either way you can’t go wrong.
