This week on “The White Lotus,” episode four continues seamlessly into episode five with the full moon party at full speed. Tension remains high with more mysterious adventures, vibrant strobe-lit dances, and late-night intimacy.
Gaitok and his Gun Troubles
Danger unfolds as Gaitok reviews security camera footage showing Tim entering the access control point and stealing the security guard’s gun. Through previous eavesdropping on Tim’s phone calls, Gaitok is aware of Tim’s involvement in crimes back home in North Carolina. Suspecting a harmful situation, Gaitok confronts Tim, however, the man refuses to reveal the truth about the weapon. After his heroic actions fighting the hotel robbers in episode three, Gaitok misses the chance at another moment of being awarded for his nobility.
Wild Wild Ratliffs
Meanwhile, the Ratliff family craziness persists as Piper confesses to her parents that she did not bring them to Thailand for a thesis. Rather than visiting for research purposes, the daughter reveals that she wishes to join the meditation community for at least a year. After graduation, Piper wants to stay in the country to be involved in meditation to immerse herself in Buddhism and enhance her spirituality. The Ratliff parents, particularly Victoria, are utterly dumbstruck by this news, and an argument erupts at the dinner table. The mother announces, “I don’t even have my Lorazepam. I’m going to have to drink myself to sleep!”
After the argument concludes at the hotel’s restaurant, Tim sits at the table in the family’s hotel room, writing a suicide note to the family, with Gaitok’s gun at his side. Luckily, Victoria disrupts this decision, and Tim puts the weapon down, folding his hands and talking to God instead.
Romance in the Moonlight
While the rest of the Ratliffs are facing troubling revelations, Saxon and Lochlan party the night away with Chelsea and Chloe. The brothers continue their sexual conquest, and Saxon, “mentoring” his younger brother, tells Lochlan, “It’s better to go for what you want in life and get rejected than have this shot and not take it. We have one life, Loch.” The younger brother, more in tune with the Buddhist ideologies taught at the resort, responds to Saxon, asking, “What if this life is just a test to see if we can become better people?”
As the morning sunlight approaches, the four resort guests, who continue with the drinks and drugs, begin challenging one another to kiss. Saxon starts the game by daring Chloe and Chelsea to kiss, then Chloe and Lochlan. The night takes a turn when Chloe suggests that the two brothers should kiss — and they accept.
Double trouble
Another party is taking place amid the full moon extravaganza, where Laurie, Kate, and Jaclyn dance and drink alongside Valentin and his two friends. Laurie invites the men to return to the hotel with the women to keep the party going into the morning. After hours of dancing and laughing in the hotel pool, the night comes to an end with the men leaving and the women going to bed. Jaclyn, however, convinces Valentin to follow her to her room and forgets about her husband back home.
Rick and Chamomile Tea
In the meantime, Rick catches up with an old friend, Frank (Sam Rockwell), over whiskey and chamomile tea in Bangkok. Frank shares his fascination particularly with Asian women, explaining this as his reasoning for choosing to live in Thailand. After nearly “a thousand nights” of being with multiple women each night, Frank explains the feeling of becoming “insatiable,” saying he “start[ed] to lose it.”
He shares his deepest and most intimate experiences and his exploration of the role of gender identity within these experiences. This confession led to Frank’s adoption of Buddhist beliefs, referring to sex as a “poetic act” and a “metaphor.” He mentions that these beliefs encompass “spirit versus form, detaching from self and getting off the never-ending carousel of lust and suffering.” After endless blank stares and nods of confusion, Rick eventually asks Frank to keep the following night free for “roleplay,” although his intentions are unclear. He remains mysterious throughout this episode, not yet disclosing if his plans involve his interest in Frank’s shared experience or his mission to find Sritala’s husband.
Belinda and the Mystery Man
A particular hotel guest has grown interest in Belinda, as shared to the woman by Fabian. Discovering that he is referring to the suspicious Gary/Greg, Belinda shares details about Tanya McQuiod’s (Jennifer Coolidge) death to Fabian from the previous season of “The White Lotus.” Rather than calling the police about the concerning matter, he tells Belinda that Gary/Greg was simply curious and that she will “survive.” She finds comfort in the situation with Pornchai, however, who spends the night with Belinda to stay by her side through her concerns. The two end the chaos of the night in a kiss, intertwined in their desires.
