In full bloom: Superbloom Collective cultivates community and self-expression through mindfulness and music

In the desert landscape where wildflowers bloom in unison after rare rains, Superbloom Collective takes inspiration from nature’s phenomenon and also creates spaces for humans to do the same.

Founded by Brandon Darnell and Courtney Miller in early 2023, Superbloom Collective is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rooted in community wellness, mindfulness and emotional vulnerability. Brandon, a mindfulness facilitator and community organizer, had been hosting breathwork circles and meditation events at the beach. Courtney, a former collegiate athlete and experienced fitness trainer, was building a movement community through donation-based bodyweight workouts and biohacking modalities in local parks.

The two had connected a few years earlier through mutual friends but hadn’t really gotten to know each other. “One day, I posted on Instagram asking for help setting up for a beach event,” said Brandon Darnell. “Courtney responded saying, ‘I’ll come by.’ She came, helped set up, and didn’t even stay for the event — she was just there to support.”

In return, Miller shared details about her fitness classes, Connect & Move, a community workout with free coffee and a recovery lounge featuring biohacking tools in the park. “People had space before and after the workout to connect and socialize,” said Courtney Miller.

To show his appreciation, Darnell offered to DJ at Miller’s morning workouts. “We just started bouncing back and forth — I’d help at her events, and she’d come to mine,” Darnell said.

In January 2023, the two went on a seven-day sailing retreat together with a few friends. It was during this trip that they truly got to know each other’s stories, vision and mission. “We realized my emphasis on mindfulness and intentional experiences paired really well with her goal for building community and creating spaces for people to connect,” Darnell said.

When they returned from the retreat, they hosted their first event together on February 12, 2023, and soon after, they decided to form Superbloom Collective.

“The official start date of our nonprofit is June 2023, but our unofficial start — when we actually began hosting events as Superbloom Collective — was February 2023,” Darnell said.

Accessibility has remained at the core of their mission, which is why most events are free or donation-based.

“We believe if we introduce modalities of mindfulness and cultivate meaningful community, we can cultivate a super bloom of human expression, kindness, connection and love,” Miller said.

The collective now hosts about 10 different events each month, all offering a mix of yoga, music, breathwork and conscious conversation. Some of these include Superbloom Beach Club, a monthly event with yoga, meditation, live music and community-building activities at Hotchkiss Park; Tea & House, an alcohol-free celebration of house music with tea, dancing and connection; and Laundrynite, a unique gathering at a laundromat featuring live DJs, tea, games and socializing.

“When someone comes to our events and they’re alone, nervous or unsure — we don’t try to fix that. We just make space for it,” Miller said. “And in doing that, we watch people open up in the most beautiful ways.”

LISTEN is a signature three-day, two-night camping, music and wellness festival held in Desert Hot Springs, California, designed to bring people together for wellness activations during the day and live DJs and vocal performances at night.

Amrit Bhavinani, a sound and light facilitator, discovered Superbloom after a month in the desert attending other festivals. A friend shared the event flyer with him, and although he didn’t know much about the collective, he felt called to reach out.

With no expectations, he emailed co-founders Brandon and Courtney offering to run sound, light and vibration sessions. To his surprise, they replied within 10 minutes.

“I was so gracious to be a small part,” said Amrit Bhavinani. “The Superbloom Collective is super inclusive. They want you to shine and help provide a container and platform to do so.”

“While the West Side of L.A. has become a wellness Costco of sorts, the key in any community is finding what resonates with you,” Bhavinani said. “For me, it is the intentionality of the events and hand-picked facilitators with genuine intentions — the alignment of being here to help and serve rather than profit and promote. That is a big one for me.”

That sense of purpose, he added, creates an environment unlike any other.

“Superbloom is meant to be a wellness experience and outlet for all,” Bhavinani said. “The diversity in ages, income levels, backgrounds and breadth of beautiful souls is just impressive.”

“Inclusivity, rooted in a deeper sense of safety and care, is at the core of everything they do,” Darnell said.

“We want people to feel like they can breathe deeper when they walk into our spaces,” Miller said. “That feeling you get when you’re around people who genuinely care — that’s what we’re trying to build.”

The nonprofit prioritizes accessibility, not just physical or financial, but emotional and spiritual. That intention shows up in everything from the pricing model to the tone of event flyers.

“The community is committed to keeping wellness accessible and inclusive through low-cost or free tickets and volunteer opportunities,” Bhavinani said. “That brings people with open hearts and hands — ready to grow, not just boost their follower count or chase a vibe.”

Superbloom events hold space for people to cry, laugh, journal, scream, sing or sit in silence, sometimes all in one evening. The invitation is always the same: Come as you are, and leave feeling more like yourself.

“One of the most powerful reflections we’ve gotten back — and continue to get back — is that people feel seen at our events,” Darnell said. “They feel hopeful.”

Bhavinani echoed that sentiment, sharing how the community has helped him explore new ways of expressing himself and facing personal growth.

“When we are vulnerable and feel safe to communicate, we are also shown through the community our mirrors,” Bhavinani said. “Just as a rising tide raises all ships, a superbloom sprouts our planted seeds.”

That core philosophy is reflected in the name itself.

“In nature, a super bloom is when wildflowers all bloom at the same time in the desert,” Darnell said. “We believe if we introduce mindfulness practices and build meaningful community, we can create a super bloom of human expression, kindness, connection and love.”

The collective spirit of growth is central to Superbloom’s approach, distinguishing it from other wellness organizations.

“It’s refreshing for people to come into a wellness space where it’s not just about the individual experience — it’s about the collective experience, both in the moment and beyond it,” Miller said. “All the energy that comes into our events supports the individual, supports the collective and continues outward.”

Superbloom’s consistency in creating safe, expressive spaces, from desert gatherings to intimate sound sessions, is a reflection of the founders’ dedication.

“They’re not just event hosts,” Bhavinani said. “They’re stewards of energy. They hold the field, and they invite others to do the same. That’s rare.”

“We’ve always said Superbloom is a collective for a reason,” Miller said. “It belongs to whoever shows up. We’re just lucky to tend the soil.”

Looking ahead, they hope to expand their reach while keeping the heart of the community intact. Still, they’re not chasing scale or attention. They’re chasing meaning.

At its core, Superbloom Collective isn’t just a wellness movement. It’s a radical act of connection and a space for people to bloom together.

Superbloom Collective’s upcoming event, Beats, Balance & Breathwork, will be held Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hotchkiss Park in Santa Monica. The event will feature a live DJ, yoga, sound bowls and pop-ups from local wellness brands. Guests can expect energizing music, ocean views and the chance to connect with others in the community.
