LMU’s Recovery Center located at Malone 113 is a place for healing and personal growth. It includes recovery for substance use and other mental health challenges.

Directed by Bradley Smith, the Recovery Band was created to make the Recovery Center more accessible for students by offering an engaging entry point through music.

Since its first performance last year, the band has showcased the campus’ diverse body of poets, writers, dancers, musicians, and other creatives.

Participating in the band is not about being a polished performer, but being the best version of yourself. Smith emphasizes that what matters most is the band’s commitment to growth and true dedication to their craft, “That’s how I help the world, by helping the next generation of people” he says, amplifying his belief in investing in students as a way to shape the future.

On electric guitar, Francesca Vidal both sings and shreds through electric rock ballads, “Vocally, I really love to perform Crazy Train. I have a lot of fun using my voice in that range. Instrumentally, I really enjoy playing Light My Fire. The chord changes are so smooth and everything really fits together”.

For performers and listeners alike, music becomes a meaningful outlet to focus on the positive parts of life through feel-good music. As several of the band’s members prepare to graduate this Spring, the group is entering a new chapter. With open auditions for students ready to make a difference in their lives, they are hoping to expand the band to an upper-division course to practice stagecraft, performance, lighting, and song writing.

“We want to welcome anyone who wants to improve their life,” says Smith. “We need to build community and keep recovery visible on the bluff”.
