In case you missed DJ Mandy’s set at the St. Rob’s Auditorium on Friday night, here’s what you need to know. If you didn’t know her already, now you do. With over 835k followers on TikTok, Mandy has built a major following online. Her live performance showed exactly why she’s gaining momentum.
Amanda Shultz AKA DJ Mandy started by trolling viewers in her bedroom with her ironic, hilarious mash-ups that just didn’t make any sense. Reeling viewers in with these funny mash-ups, leaving people confused yet intrigued, forming the loyal fanbase that she has today.
With abrupt transitions with no fade whatsoever, people seemed to love the irony of her videos. She somehow mixes Taylor Swift’s Wildest Dreams with Pitbull’s Hotel Room Service all while keeping a straight face.
You might be able to consider her earlier content ragebait. Many people get the satirical aspect of her videos but they can sometimes have people questioning if she is genuinely serious. However, she has since transitioned into her super smooth, high energy sets while still staying true to those original mashups that her fans love. Mandy can do it all.
Thirty minutes before the event started, there was already a huge crowd forming. The line to enter the auditorium stretched down Palm Walk, wrapping all the way around the corner. Food and drink vendors set up in the nearby grass with lines already packed. Once you got to the front, you were handed a wristband and two tickets for free food, hotdogs or nachos, and ice cream, with a variety of flavors, from Handels.
Nelli Hakopyan, Julie Jimenez, and Madison Kemp, all juniors at LMU, shared how they found Mandy through Tiktok’s for you page, Instagram reels and even ended up sending each other some of her videos. The girls discovered her and thought she was super funny. “I’m expecting to hear some beats, some bumps. I know she can actually do some really good DJing, so I’m excited to hear that. But also maybe going back to where she started and throwing in some funny, ironic, satirical songs,” Madison said.
Other students like Bennett Mueller, a senior at LMU, had their first introduction to Mandy through this event but hoped she would play “Fein” by Travis Scott. Graduate student Zernell Gillie gave his thoughts on what he hoped to hear. “I want to hear a crazy mash-up. Some house song with Nicki Minaj or something,” Zernell said. It would be no surprise if Mandy did exactly that.
The auditorium was transformed. Upon entering- guests were immediately transported to a nightclub in London. Multicolored lights radiated throughout the room. The booth was set up in the center of the space, boiler room style. The event kicked off with the student opener, Conscious Lion. The upbeat set went on for about twenty minutes before the headliner.
At around 8:20 p.m.,DJ Mandy came out to perform. She started off with a high energy house song and transitioned into Drake and Central Cee’s new song Which One. The crowd was jumping and vibing, waving multicolored glowsticks in the air. Everyone was loving the super exciting music that filled the room, someone even got up on their friends shoulders. The set lasted until around 9 before she ended her iconic performance.
Mandy is only getting started as she sets off on her Let Me Cook Tour on September 7th in Princeton, New Jersey.
